SECTION A

 MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE: SETUP A #1

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BREAK THROUGH CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY > 85 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

A way to play this strategy is on market gap down days with strong stocks. Strong run up of BRCD is stopped out by yesterday’s close. This play is long because market seems to be holding. Also BRCD finds nice simultaneous support at yesterday’s support level and at support against today’s open.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #1”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BREAK THROUGH CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY > 85 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

CIEN makes a strong recovery from today’s low and keeps holding against close despite a new mkt selloff. Resistance against the close is broken when the market selloff ends.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((CLOSE - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

This strategy works well on an upmoving market that is about to reverse. The resistance provided by yesterday’s Close, combined with the relative weakness of the stock (below close while mkt already way above close) makes it a relative safe entry. Even if the market continues it upmove, the close will temporarily halt the stock’s upmove, leaving enough time to exit the position at break even or a small loss.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((CLOSE - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

BRCD makes a delayed overextended uprun till yesterday’s close. Three factors contribute to a strong reversal:

 1) resistance provided by the close  2) the stocks overextended structure and delayed reaction and  3) the market has reversed. The buying wave is so strong that although the market already has topped out, the buying continues, providing an easy short entry.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 3:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((CLOSE - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

CHKP shows little trend development and is heavily overbought when it reaches the close. The resistance provided by the close and the market reversal provide a very good short play.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 4:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((CLOSE - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

This setup is a good example of the strong resistance that the close can provide. Although the market is still moving up, CHKP already bounces off clearly from the closing price. As soon as the market buy wave is over, CHKP goes down very hard.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #3”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BREAK THROUGH CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY < 15 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

The close can provide an excellent short entry even when the market is in the middle of a strong selloff. The initial strong move down of BRCM shows it’s weakness. However, the support provided by the close allows traders an entry to play into the market direction.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP #3”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BREAK THROUGH CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY < 15 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

Strong downward hugging pattern against the close in combination with a gradual mkt downtrend makes a reliable short play. Use the brief market spike up for entry short.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #3”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BREAK THROUGH CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 3:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY < 15 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

VRSN keeps hugging the close although the market already starts to recover, making for a good short play. When the market recovery leg is over, VRSN breaks down.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - CLOSE) / CLOSE) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

The gap up of the nasdaq sets a bullish tone. Traders use the gap up to sell into BRCD. The strong support provided by the close, in combination with the persisting bullish market tone provides a nice reversal play long.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - CLOSE) / CLOSE) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

Even though the nasdaq is clearly bearish, the close provides sufficient support for a long play. The probability of a long play is enhanced by the orderly selloff in BRCD. The support at the closing price is enough to turn the trend around.

MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 3:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - CLOSE) / CLOSE) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

Both market and ADBE are trading, not trending, making reversals likely. The oversold positions against the close provide strong bounces long.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 4:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - CLOSE) / CLOSE) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

CMVT is stopped out by the close already ahead of the market selloff, setting up for a probable long play. Flatting out of the market is enough for a play long.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #5”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT PULLBACK TO CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((OPEN - LOW)/ OPEN)*100 > 2

AND

OPEN > CLOSE

TRADING STRATEGY:

VRTS shows it’s weakness when it keeps hugging the close and even breaking down, even though the market has started to recover. The strong selloff makes VRTS temporarily oversold and it immediately follows the market. As soon as the overextended posture is compensated though, the resistance provided by the close proves to be too strong and VRTS continues in it’s original direction.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #5”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT PULLBACK TO CLOSE”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((OPEN - LOW)/ OPEN)*100 > 2

AND

OPEN > CLOSE

TRADING STRATEGY:

Both market and CMVT are clearly bearish. Even though the market selloff continues to be strong, CMVT has some difficulty breaking the close. As soon as the support of the close has been taken out, it becomes a resistance level. During a brief mkt recovery, CMVT tries to break it long but the market is too bearish. A strong delayed bounce off the close follows. Strong resistance of the close, in combination with the bearish mkt make for a reliable short entry.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S CLOSE”  SETUP A #6”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG THROWBACK TO CLOSE”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% NET CHANGE FROM PREV. DAY’S CLOSE  BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - OPEN)/ OPEN)*100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

VTSS is tightly hugging the close, setting up for a break down. However, when the market continues to move up, the support of the close serves as a strong bounce off level.

SECTION B

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #1”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BREAK THROUGH OPEN”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY > 85 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

Although the market is decisive bullish, VRSN has difficulty clearing it’s opening price. Even though you may have missed the breakout of the market long, the delayed reaction to the strong market leg makes for a very profitable long play.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF OPEN”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((OPEN - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

CHKP is clearly weak (gap down, further breakdown against the market) but is forced up by the strong market uptrend. Even thought the market remains strong, the open is an excellent level for a short position. It can either be a scalp play, going for the bounce off the open level or be played positional, betting on some retracement in the market.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF OPEN”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((OPEN - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

CMVT is clearly weak, immediately closing the gap up and even breaking through the close. The persistant bullish market tone however forces the stock up again. When CMVT starts to approach the open level, more and more sellers are coming in. The uptrend is reversed at the open level when the market flattens out.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #3”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BREAK THROUGH OPEN”

EXAMPLE: 1

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY < 15 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

CHKP keeps hugging the level of the open despite the market upleg, setting up for a short play. As soon as the market makes a slight pullin, CHKP breaks down.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF OPEN”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - OPEN) / OPEN) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

Both market and CHKP gap up, setting a bullish tone. Although the market starts to sell off significantly, the selloff in CHKP is reluctant and orderly. The open provides enough support to reverse the trend.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF OPEN”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

((HIGH - OPEN) / OPEN) *100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

CMVT keeps resisting the market selloff against the open level, setting up for a long play. As soon as the market shows some recovery, CMVT bounces long. Can be played either scalp (bounce off open), or positional, betting on a more extended recovery in the nasdaq.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #5”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “COMPRESSION WITH BREAK DOWN”

EXAMPLE 1:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD or PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

or

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

AND

(RANGE DAY / CURRENT PRICE) *100 < 1

TRADING STRATEGY:

An application of this strategy can be for example during a sudden strong market selloff from the open. XLNX keeps compressing right from the open, despite the strong market selloff. This is an excellent delayed short play. Despite it’s resilience, XLNX has no option but to follow the market in a strong delayed selloff.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #5”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “COMPRESSION WITH BREAK DOWN”

EXAMPLE 2:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD or PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

or

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

AND

(RANGE DAY / CURRENT PRICE) *100 < 1

TRADING STRATEGY:

YHOO finds strong resistance at the open level and a yesterday’s support level despite the initial market move up, setting up for a short play. As soon as the market turns around, YHOO breaks down hard.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #6”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “COMPRESSION WITH BREAK UP”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD or PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

or

% CHANGE FROM OPEN < 1

AND

(RANGE DAY / CURRENT PRICE) *100 < 1

TRADING STRATEGY:

BRCD gapped up quite significantly and has difficulty to move up despite the market’s decisive bullish tone due to it’s large divergence from it’s trendline. The market keeps moving up though, forcing BRCD out of it’s compression level, making for an strong delayed break long.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #7”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “MOVE DOWN”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN > -1,5

AND

((HIGH - OPEN) / OPEN) * 100 < 0,5

TRADING STRATEGY:

BRCM moves decisively down, holding in a downflag pattern, even during a brief market recovery, setting up clearly on the short side. As soon as the market recovery ends, BRCM breaks down hard.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS OR FROM OPEN”  SETUP B #8”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “MOVE UP”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (STANDARD VERSION):

% CHANGE FROM OPEN > 1,5

AND

((OPEN - LOW) / OPEN) * 100 < 0,5

TRADING STRATEGY:

HGSI moves up strongly trying to fill the gap despite the flat/ downward moving market. When it briefly flags to compensate for it’s overextended position, a clear entry long is in place. A spike up in the market is enough to trigger a strong rally.

SECTION C

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S HIGH”  SETUP C #1”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BREAK THROUGH YESTERDAY’S HIGH”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

((YESTERDAY’S HIGH - CURRENT PRICE) / CURRENT PRICE) * 100 BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY > 85 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

YHOO starts to build an uptriangle against yesterday’s high while the market is moving up. The bullish persistance in the market makes for a strong long setup.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S HIGH”  SETUP C #2”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BOUNCE OFF YESTERDAY’S HIGH”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

 ((YESTERDAY’S HIGH - CURRENT PRICE) / CURRENT PRICE) * 100 BETWEEN -1 AND 0

AND

((YESTERDAY’S HIGH - LOW) / LOW) * 100 > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

VRSN comes out of a deep valley and makes an overextended hit on yesterday’s high, making for a clear short setup. A small spike down in the market is enough to trigger a strong bounce off the level of yesterday’s high.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S HIGH”  SETUP C #3”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT BREAK THROUGH YESTERDAY’S HIGH”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

 ((CURRENT PRICE - YESTERDAY’S HIGH) / CURRENT PRICE) * 100 BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

 % RANGE DAY < 15 %

TRADING STRATEGY:

It is usually best to play a break down near the low of day therefore a % RANGE DAY < 15% is included. However, here an example when a stock does not meet this criterium but still makes for a good short play: HGSI’s initial morning rally quickly exhausts itself and the stock is clearly hugging downward against yesterday’s high, despite the strong market upmove, setting itself up for a short play. When the market turns around there is a strong break down. There is enough supply at yesterday’s high to provide an entry short, even when the market has already turned, providing a safe entry.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S HIGH”  SETUP C #4”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “LONG BOUNCE OFF YESTERDAY’S HIGH”

EXAMPLE:

SORTWIZARD QUERY (PLUS VERSION):

((CURRENT PRICE - YESTERDAY’S HIGH) / CURRENT PRICE) * 100 BETWEEN 1 AND 0

AND

% GAP > 2

TRADING STRATEGY:

The market gaps up, setting a bullish tone. Despite the initial weakness of AMAT, the bullish tone in combination with the support provided by yesterday’s high is enough to turn the stock around.

“MOVEMENT TOWARDS YESTERDAY’S HIGH”  SETUP C #5”:

TRADING PATTERN:   “SHORT PULLBACK TO YESTERDAY’S HIGH”

EXAMPLE:
